Can you use GO Taxi in Japan with a foreign phone number? Often, yes. But you may be blocked from registering outside Japan, miss an SMS code or be unable to use certain payment methods. If SMS verification fails, GO also documents a passport-and-selfie option. Start with the problem below, then follow the matching steps.
Checked against GO’s official guidance on October 11, 2026. Registration and payment eligibility vary. We have not tested GO sign-up with every overseas number.
GO not working with your foreign number? Check this first
| Your problem | What to check next |
|---|---|
| The app blocks registration while you are outside Japan | Check overseas sign-up restrictions; some country codes cannot register abroad. |
| No SMS code arrives | Check your phone line, then try passport verification if the option is offered. |
| Your account exists, but you cannot order a taxi | Turn on GO’s required location permission for foreign numbers. |
| Cash / in-car payment is unavailable | Check the June 2025 payment restriction. |
| GO Pay declines your card | Follow GO Pay troubleshooting before ordering. |
| You need a taxi immediately | Use another confirmed way to travel, such as an official taxi rank. |
Important: Registration, verification, location access and payment are separate checks. A successful sign-up does not mean the app can request and pay for a taxi.
Foreign phone numbers: before and after arriving in Japan
Before you leave home
GO says some phone numbers cannot be used to register from outside Japan. It does not publish a definitive list of affected countries on that help page. If you use a US or Canadian number (+1) or an Australian number (+61), you can try registering. Your country code does not guarantee success. If blocked, make another plan for your arrival.
After you reach Japan
Already in Japan and still blocked? Enable location access for GO and try again, as GO advises. Separately, GO requires location access when using a foreign number to request a taxi. Check that GO has permission to use your location before ordering. These are different requirements from receiving an SMS code or paying for a ride. Check GO’s official registration and location rules in the box below.
Before you register: a quick checklist
- Your usual mobile number and country code. Confirm the line can receive SMS, including while roaming if you register after arrival.
- SIM and eSIM settings. A data-only travel eSIM provides internet access, but does not itself receive ordinary SMS on your usual phone number.
- A passport, email address and camera. These are used if GO offers its alternative identity-verification flow.
- A payment method that works. GO Pay restrictions may apply even after registration succeeds.
Method 1: sign up with a foreign number and SMS
Open GO’s official English screen guide in the box below, then follow the steps. The guide shows the actual registration screens.
-
STEP 1Open the GO appIn the GO app, tap Sign up.
-
STEP 2Allow location accessWhen prompted, allow GO to access your location in your device settings.
-
STEP 3Enter your phone numberChoose your country code and enter a number that can receive SMS.
-
STEP 4Verify the SMS codeEnter the four-digit code GO sends by SMS. No code? Try the SMS checks or the passport method.
-
STEP 5Complete your profileAdd your account details. GO says to enter your name without spaces.
-
STEP 6Set up GO PayAdd a GO Pay method. Before booking, review the foreign-number payment restrictions.
-
STEP 7Check app permissionsFollow the prompts for notifications and microphone access.
-
STEP 8Finish registrationOnce registered, GO recommends adding an email address in the Menu to help keep access when you change devices.
Do not confuse the four-digit SMS verification code with a taxi pickup confirmation number. They serve different purposes.
Method 2: no SMS? Use your passport and a selfie
If you cannot receive SMS, GO documents a passport-and-selfie option. It is not guaranteed to work for every country or account. Use the official screen guide below, and take photos only inside the GO app.
What you need
- A valid passport.
- An email address that you can verify and access.
- A phone or other supported device with a working camera.
- Enough light and a suitable space to capture legible identity photographs.
Official alternative registration steps
-
STEP 1Choose the no-SMS optionIf shown, select “Cannot receive a SMS message?” on the verification screen.
-
STEP 2Enter your email and passwordSet up your email address and password.
-
STEP 3Verify your emailEnter the four-digit code sent by email. This is not an SMS code.
-
STEP 4Take passport and selfie photosFollow the prompts to photograph your passport and then yourself inside the GO app. Before submitting, check the photo instructions in GO’s official guide above.
-
STEP 5Enter account detailsFill in the remaining account details requested by GO.
-
STEP 7Check app permissionsFollow any prompts for notifications and microphone access.
-
STEP 8Finish registrationCheck that the app confirms you have completed the required steps.
Approval is not guaranteed. The option may not appear for every account or country. If the option is unavailable or verification fails, use the GO support link in the troubleshooting box below. Submit passport photos only in the official app, never to an unofficial agent.
What if registration or payment still fails?
No SMS: Check the number, country code, mobile signal and spam filtering. With dual SIM, enable the line linked to your number. A data-only eSIM alone cannot receive regular SMS. Use the official SMS troubleshooting link in the box below, or try the passport method above.
Passport or email verification fails: Check the official passport guide in the box below. If the option is missing or your images are rejected, use the GO support link in the same box. Do not send identity documents to unofficial agents.
Card declined: Confirm the card details, credit limit and any 3D Secure check from your issuer; see the official card troubleshooting link in the box below. If GO Pay still fails and in-car payment is unavailable, use a conventional taxi or another transport option.
GO payment restrictions for foreign phone numbers
If you created a GO account with a non-Japanese phone number in June 2025 or later, these payment restrictions affect rides booked through GO. Check them before your first ride:
| Payment method | GO’s published rule |
|---|---|
| In-car payment (including cash) | GO only lets newer accounts choose in-car payment if the account uses a Japanese phone number. This is a GO booking restriction, not a ban on cash in ordinary Japanese taxis. |
| d払い and PayPay | GO’s Japanese-language payment guide says they are unavailable for accounts newly registered with foreign phone numbers from June 2025 onward. |
| Credit cards in GO Pay | GO lists Visa, Mastercard, JCB, American Express and Diners Club. Card registration is not guaranteed. |
| Apple Pay in GO Pay | GO currently supports only JCB and American Express cards, according to its payment guide. |
If your card fails, use GO’s card troubleshooting guide linked in the box below. Do not book assuming you can switch to cash in the car. Use another confirmed transport option if payment cannot be set up.
What about GO coupons for visitors? GO’s English website warns that coupon distribution to users verified with non-Japanese numbers will end; no cutoff date is stated there. GO’s coupon guide also says some offers require a Japanese phone number and coupons must be selected with GO Pay. Check your own account before counting on a discount. The official payment and coupon references are linked below.
Check the fare and service fees before booking
GO’s official fee schedule (linked below; revised July 24, 2026) lists taxi fares, pickup charges and service fees. Its ¥200 International Service Charge applies to qualifying GO-booked rides by short-term foreign visitors, but not in areas where the remote-area service charge applies. It is not a registration fee. Other fees may apply depending on the area, taxi company or service selected.
Before tapping Request Taxi, open the app’s Fare Details to check which charges apply to your request. For meter fares, the initial figure can be an estimate, and tolls may be extra. GO’s International Service Charge FAQ, linked below, explains when that fee is charged and how to check the receipt.
Uber Taxi or GO? What I would use in Japan
My personal choice: Uber Taxi first in Tokyo; GO first outside Tokyo. I use Uber Taxi in Japan, and it feels easier to find a car in central Tokyo than it used to. For many of my Tokyo trips, Uber Taxi is enough. Outside Tokyo, I would check GO first, although taxi availability varies by area. This is a preference based mainly on my Tokyo experience, not a measured comparison of vehicle numbers across Japan.
Why Uber in Tokyo? I value the option to translate in-app messages when communicating with drivers, and I often see promotions worth checking. English-speaking drivers still seem uncommon in my experience, so don’t rely on conversation in English. Discounts depend on the account and trip: check the official promotion rules linked below and the final fare. GO remains a strong alternative if Uber is unavailable, slow or expensive.
GO and Uber Taxi both operate across Japan, but nationwide service does not guarantee a nearby car. Compare the apps at your actual pickup location. See our complete Uber Taxi guide for Japan; Uber’s English directory of taxi cities in Japan is linked below.
When not to rely on GO: If registration, identity verification or GO Pay cannot be completed in time, stop trying and choose another way to travel. Do not let repeated attempts delay your trip. If Uber Taxi offers an available ride, you can use it. Otherwise, go to a taxi rank or ask your hotel to arrange a ride. This is practical editorial guidance based on GO’s published requirements, not a firsthand GO registration test.
If neither taxi app works
Need to travel now? Use a marked taxi rank at an airport, station or major hotel, or ask reception to arrange a conventional taxi. Public transport may be easier where a suitable route exists. Confirm payment methods before boarding, and leave a time buffer for airport transfers or important appointments.
Quick answers
Do I need a Japanese phone number? Not necessarily for sign-up. But overseas registration, location settings and payment restrictions can affect foreign numbers. See registration limits and payment limits.
Can I register using only a data-only eSIM? Data access is not SMS reception. If you cannot receive texts on another active line, follow GO’s passport and email method if it appears in the app.
Can I pay cash in a taxi without GO? Conventional taxis may accept cash, subject to the company. Confirm with the driver before traveling. GO’s in-car payment rules apply to app bookings.
Editorial note
As of October 11, 2026, the author has used Uber Taxi in Japan, especially in Tokyo. The Tokyo/Uber and outside-Tokyo/GO choice is personal advice, not measured nationwide performance. We have not tested GO sign-up or compared the apps’ fleet sizes or drivers’ English ability. Check each provider’s current conditions before booking.
